Alex Schuurbiers

Alex Schuurbiers (she/her, NL/BE) is an artist working predominantly with analogue audiovisual media. Her practice focuses on trance-like, non-hierarchical narrative structures in regards to the subconscious, incorporating themes such as heimat, maternal lineage, intergenerational transmission, trauma and resilience. Her artistic research centers on memory and its representation in film based works, as well as ecological developing methods and the effects of organic matter on celluloid. Her work includes En Vagues (2023) and Where I lay my head to rest (2023) and Song of Homecoming (2023) and Placeholder (2025). Alex is also a founding member of Ursula, a collective of women working with the moving image in Antwerp. Ursula organizes peer-to-peer meetings, screenings, and exhibitions, always seeking a conversation between their work and that of other feminist artists.

The aftermath, meaning:

You reaching down my throat grabbing all you could take hold of and pulling it out from between clenched teeth. Bare tits basking in the glow, soft and pregnable. You’ve been inside me and left me barren. There is no part of me that’s still mine. Have no fear, you say, I’m not going anywhere. A face frozen over like a winter lake. No ripples of tenderness. Hands sticking out, hands holding my insides sticking out, holding out your hands draped with my insides. A gift, an offering, you say: I’ll let you touch them if it pleases you but they’ll never be yours again.
