able body

my able body taunts me

from (across) the crosswalk

the light’s green, babe

because it knows that if I started walking,

my lower back would creak,

my right foot would scream

and my left knee would punish me,

an ill-behaved child

my able body lies under my bed,

twisting knots and pushing bulges

into the mattress

until I wake up

bump in the night

and it’s my hip,

it’s always my fucking hip

my able body,

young and pretty,

walks towards me without a limp,

stands still without trembling

and bends down without a wince

to touch its toes,

only using its body to say

look at me

as if grief is a game
