Doing the Work

Aline van der Grinten

Aline van der Grinten (she/her) is a 24-year-old architecture student. Her texts play with anger and irony, circling around the pressure to function within a productivity-driven world. They explore the friction between external demands and internalized perfectionism.

She is interested in what is usually silenced: emotional volatility, bodily overwhelm, and the refusal to function. Her work insists on visibility — on speaking what is considered too much, too loud, too uncomfortable.

Women are allowed to be angry. Women are allowed to speak about shame. Women are allowed to lament publicly and loudly.

Her writing does not aim to resolve, but to remain — in contradiction, in intensity, in the unfinished.

Ich arbeite dran

(English below)

Wenn ich nur alles genug verstecke

Den Schnodder und die Tränen weg lecke

Schön das Hässliche verberge

Grausam das Lächeln herberge

Dann kann ich hinter den Kulissen luken

In meinem leeren Körper rumspuken.

Die Attrappen von innen betrachten

Bei Wind und Trubel auf sie achten.

Eine Ausbildung zur Bühnenbildnerin absolvieren.

Mit einer Abschlussarbeit:

Alle applaudieren.

Doing the work

If I could hide everything just enough

lick away the tears and the snot

beautifully cover the vile

cruelly accommodate the smile

then I could peek behind the backdrops

haunt my body, staged in props

study the props from the inside

stay alert when wind and turbulence collide

trained as a stage designer

with one final project:

everyone applauds.
